Few things are more discouraging than a high-quality employee leaving your company. And too often leaders shrug their shoulders and say it must be because they were offered more money or better benefits elsewhere.
Here are five big reasons why people are likely leaving your organization.
#1 A Purpose Wasn’t Clear
Too often people aren’t sure what the purpose is behind all of the work. Sure, they get a paycheck and they like a few of their co-workers; but this isn’t enough to convince them to stay.
We all want to contribute to something bigger than ourselves and leave our own personal mark on the world. At work, when we don’t know what the point is, we begin to search for a cause we can join in some other place.
It shouldn’t be this way. Companies who give their people a clear and compelling purpose are much more likely to engage their team and keep them around.
#2 Their Role Wasn’t Clear
If a purpose is clear but someone’s role in achieving it isn’t, this can lead to employee departures. Too many workers don’t understand why their job is relevant or how they contribute to the purpose of their organization.
Wise leaders frequently explain and remind their team members why their work matters and how they are adding value to the purpose.
#3 The Environment Was Unstable
No one likes the feeling of treading on unstable ground. If your organization lacks consistency in how it operates, behaves, communicates, handles difficult situations, evaluates employees, etc., people are going to feel uneasy. When there is a lack of stability within a company, people look for a place where they can feel more secure.
Creating consistent and predictable patterns at work establishes a stable environment that most crave.
#4 Their Efforts Weren’t Noticed
Another reason why people leave your organization is because they wonder if anyone notices their efforts. Too often people feel unappreciated at work. When this happens, they look to find the recognition and appreciation they seek somewhere else.
Celebrating progress, even small wins, will go a long way in helping your people know you not only notice but also appreciate their work.
#5 They Didn’t Feel Cared About
It is hard to walk away from a leader or organization you feel cares about you. It is easy to walk away from a company or leader who you believe does not. People need to know someone at work cares about them as a person and as an individual.
Leaders and companies who can help their people know they care on more than just a superficial level will retain their valuable team members.
These 5 things are why most people are leaving your organization. By fixing them you can create a stronger company culture, and soon others will wonder why everyone is leaving their company to join yours.
