mission vision values

Most reputable companies have some form of a mission, vision, and values for their organization. However not all of these companies are successful so do they really matter that much?  The answer is yes!

Though most have them, here are two reasons why they don’t always help and why you still need them.

#1

Most mission, vision, and values are poorly written. Thus, they fail to inspire the team or create organizational clarity around the purpose, standards, and direction of the company. Essentially, they completely miss their whole reason for existence and therefore add little value.

Leaders should not be distracted by the lack of value some companies glean from them, because institutions with well-crafted missions, visions, and values profit from them tremendously. When constructed right, they have the power to align and motivate teams and provide the foundation for a high-performing company culture.

#2

Though most companies have a mission, vision, and values, few live by them or use them to guide decisions. When this happens they can actually hurt the organization rather than help it.

Companies that do live by them build strong cultures. In fact, because it is so rare, those that do this gain a competitive advantage that leads to extraordinary results.

A mission, vision, & values, when properly used in an organization, hold the greatest power in changing behavior. They are a must, unless leaders and organizations are unwilling to write them well and live by them.
