Two of the most important days in your employees’ employment life cycle are their first day and their last. While many days will be forgotten, these two will most likely be remembered for years to come.

The first day of work is typically filled with anticipation and excitement. It is a day most people look forward to, prepared to discover what your company is truly all about and make a contribution.

The last day may be a mixed bag of emotions. However, regardless of the situation, this final day will leave a lasting impression. Even when having to let someone go, you can make this day as positive as possible by doing it with kindness, appreciation, and grace.

Leaders should ask themselves, what kind of first impression are we making and how does it compare to what we want it to be? And, what sort of lasting memory are we providing to those who are departing?

The first and last days only happen once. Mistakenly, too many leaders and companies don’t pay as much attention to them as they should. As a result, they miss out on tremendous opportunities to enhance their reputation and their work environment.

If you want an easy way to improve your company’s culture, begin by focusing on making everyone’s first day and last day with your organization a memory they hold dear.
